The first few years of a child’s life are all about milestones.

The first few years of a child’s life are all about milestones. New parents get excited to hear what their child’s first word may be. They get excited when their child crawls for the first time and when they finally take their first steps. One huge milestone is when babies eat solids for the first time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing solid foods to babies between the ages of four and six months. Although it is recommended for babies to start switching to solids during this period, it is essential to remember that every child is different and to not stress out about the exact times your child reaches certain milestones. Solids should not be introduced until your child can hold either head up on their own.

Typically parents will start introducing pureed fruits and veggies. Once they are adapted to pureed food, you can start giving them cut-up fruits and veggies. It is important to ensure the food is cut small to avoid choking. Common baby finger foods are raspberries, mango, banana, cheese, cereal, carrots, pasta, edamame, avocado, strawberries, peas, and peaches.

Even though your baby may be getting its nutrients from solid foods, milk is still essential for a child under 12 months and is still vital in the following years. Breast milk or formula should be their main drink until the child is about a year old.

Over time you can slowly introduce more foods to their diet. It is important to give the child one new food at a time, so you know what it is from if there is any allergic reaction.

All babies hit their milestones at different times, so there is no need to worry about the exact month your child starts eating solids as long as they are physically ready.
